Cross Over Voting Prohibited In Primary Runoff
Posted: 06-02-2026
June 16 is a primary runoff day in Alabama. That means the state’s law against crossover voting will be in effect. In our democracy, your voice matters. Do not let confusion about voting keep you from exercising your right to vote.
Enacted in 2017, Ala. Code § 17-13-7.1 prohibits voters from casting a ballot for one party in a primary and then crossing over to vote in another party’s runoff elections. In other words, if you voted in the Republican primary on May 19th, you can not cast a ballot in the Democratic runoff. The prohibition is the same for those who voted in the Democratic primary – you can not vote in the Republican runoff.
Voters who did not cast a ballot in May – or those who only voted on constitutional amendments – can cast a ballot in either party’s runoff.
You can vote for whomever you want to during the general election, no matter which candidate or party you supported in the primary or runoff. The party choice doesn’t bind you for future elections either, so if you vote in the Republican primary and runoff during one election cycle, you are free to vote Democratic in the next and visa versa.
